 2002 WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES

GENERAL INFORMATION

The XIX Games were held on February 8-24, 2002. By all accounts the games were a rousing success. Competition was held for seven sports in 70 medal events.

PARALYMPICS WINTER GAMES

The VIII Games were held on March 7-16, 2002. There was competition for five sports in 35 medal events. About 1,100 athletes and officials from 35 countries attended.

ORGANIZING COMMITTEE

The Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic Winter Games of 2002 (SLOC) was the private, non-profit organization responsible for staging the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

ECONOMIC IMPACT

The state of Utah reports that the 2002 Games will provide significant economic benefits to Utah, including $2.8 billion in economic output, $970 million in income to Utah workers and business owners and $236 million in gross state and local government tax revenue.

CLIMATE

The average temperature in the city February is 37.2 degrees Fahrenheit (2.9 degrees Celsius). The average annual snowfall in the Wasatch Mountains ranges between 762 and 1,270 centimeters or 300 to 500 inches.

VOLUNTEERS

An estimated 15,000 volunteers contributed to the staging of the Games.

VENUES

All venues are within a 10-60 minute drive from the Olympic Village with competition occurring at 10 Olympic venues with five city (indoor) and five mountain (outdoor) facilities.

OLYMPIC VILLAGE

The Olympic and Paralympic Village was be on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City. Opening and Closing Ceremonies also took place at Rice Stadium on the campus.

BUDGET

The primary revenue source for the Games are worldwide broadcast rights fees, sponsorships, ticket sales and licensed merchandise.

EMBLEM

The emblem of the Olympic Winter Games represents the theme of Contrast, Culture and Courage. The Paralympic emblem has the elements of Mind, Body and Spirit
